Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty

Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty

Do you have chronic sinus infections, recurrent sinus headaches, or other longstanding nasal issues? You’re missing out on work and your social life when you take time off to go to medical appointments or stay home because you feel so ill.

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive treatment to end the cycle of chronic sinusitis

Board-certified otolaryngologist Nilesh Patel, MD, offers minimally invasive balloon sinuplasty to help you breathe normally again when medication hasn’t worked. Available since 2005, this advanced procedure is a safe and highly effective alternative to traditional open sinus surgery.

What happens during balloon sinuplasty?

Dr. Patel administers sedation or general anesthesia to ensure optimal comfort during your balloon sinuplasty procedure. Next, he uses a small endoscope with a powerful light to insert a tiny catheter into your nostril.

The catheter delivers a miniature balloon into the nostril. Dr. Patel slowly inflates the balloon to open up your blocked nasal passages, then deflates it. He repeats the procedure as needed.

Finally, Dr. Patel clears out mucus and debris in your nasal passages with a saline solution. He may need to pack your nasal passages temporarily.

Benefits of balloon sinuplasty

Minimally invasive balloon sinuplasty is associated with a range of major benefits, including:

Far fewer sinus infections

You’re having a balloon sinuplasty to end the parade of chronic sinus infections, many of which require antibiotics. Nasal discharge is no longer trapped in your sinuses. Now, it can clear your airway as intended, ending the cycle of getting sick, going to the doctor, and taking medication.

No more sinus headaches

You’re used to feeling pressure build up in your face, both behind your eyes and within your cheeks and nose. Because you’re no longer bothered by a chronic health condition, you may engage in new activities and feel like you have “a new lease on life.”

Restored nasal breathing

You almost forgot what it’s like to breathe normally through your nose. Now you can experience normal breathing. You no longer go through a box of tissues in a couple of days from trying to blow the congestion out of your nose.

Increased post-procedural comfort

Dilating your nasal passages is a gentle procedure compared to open sinus surgery (which removes tissue and/or bone). You should have minimal bleeding and less pain, bruising, and swelling than with open surgery, making early recovery much more comfortable.

No incisions or hospital stay

Dr. Patel can perform balloon sinuplasty right here in our office. There are no incisions; it’s a minimally invasive procedure (unlike traditional sinus surgery). Dr. Patel uses flexible instruments to reshape and widen your nasal passages without cutting into delicate tissue.

Minimal disruption to your schedule

A balloon sinuplasty appointment causes no significant disruption to your weekly schedule. The actual procedure runs 10-30 minutes, with the entire appointment lasting about one and a half hours — or just a little longer than a routine dental appointment.

Faster healing and recovery

You’ll use special saline rinses at home for a few days as directed by Dr. Patel. We provide complete written pre-and post-procedure care instructions.

Within 24-48 hours, you can resume most normal activities, though you should avoid intense physical activity until Dr. Patel tells you it’s safe to go to the gym or play your sport again.
